Mamdani Surges Ahead of Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Primary on Eve of Election

On the eve of New York City’s highly anticipated Democratic mayoral primary, Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani has emerged as a serious contender, mounting a formidable challenge to former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Once considered the presumptive nominee, Cuomo now finds himself trailing in some polls, with Mamdani gaining momentum in the final hours before voting begins.

A poll released Monday shows Mamdani edging out Cuomo in a ranked-choice simulation with 52% to Cuomo’s 48%, signaling a dramatic shift in a race once dominated by the former governor. The winner of Tuesday’s primary will face incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent following an indictment and a wave of scandals that have dogged his administration.

Mamdani, 33, is a third-term state Assemblymember representing Astoria and surrounding neighborhoods in Queens. Born in Uganda and raised in New York, he has positioned himself as a progressive Muslim immigrant candidate aiming to transform city governance and push back against both local corruption and the influence of Donald Trump.

“If elected, I will be Trump’s worst nightmare,” Mamdani said at a recent rally, pledging to “Trump-proof” New York City while advocating for immigrant protections, LGBTQ+ rights, and reproductive healthcare access.

He has built his campaign on a bold affordability agenda: rent freezes, fare-free buses, publicly owned grocery stores, and universal childcare. To fund these policies, Mamdani has proposed higher taxes on the wealthiest 1% and corporations, claiming his revenue plan would generate billions.

The campaign has gained significant traction with grassroots support. According to the NYC Campaign Finance Board, Mamdani has raised $8 million through more than 20,000 individual donors — vastly outpacing Cuomo’s fewer than 6,000. His team also boasts what it calls the largest volunteer operation in city history, with over 27,000 canvassers mobilized across all five boroughs.

Mamdani’s political rise has not come without controversy. His criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza has drawn accusations of antisemitism from Cuomo and others — charges Mamdani has strongly denied. He has also faced scrutiny over his limited legislative record and lack of executive experience, which Cuomo seized on during debates.

But Mamdani has turned that criticism back on his opponent, pointing to Cuomo’s 2021 resignation amid sexual harassment allegations, his pandemic-era controversies, and ties to corporate donors. “I’m proud I don’t have Andrew Cuomo’s experience of corruption, scandal, and disgrace,” Mamdani said in a biting debate exchange.

Endorsed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and progressive groups like the Sunrise Movement, Mamdani has energized a new generation of voters — many of them young, diverse, and online. His savvy use of TikTok and Instagram has earned him over a million followers and helped drive turnout among first-time voters.

As New Yorkers head to the polls, the race stands as a test of whether a progressive insurgent can upend the Democratic establishment in America’s largest city.
