FDA Warns of Rising Injuries Linked to Misuse of Flavored Nitrous Oxide

U.S. health officials have raised concerns over a growing number of injuries linked to the misuse of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, particularly in its flavored forms sold in small canisters.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning on Friday, cautioning that inhaling nitrous oxide for its euphoric effects can lead to dangerously low blood pressure, loss of consciousness, and injuries. The agency flagged several brands, including Cosmic Gas, Galaxy Gas, and MassGass, which are packaged in bright, colorful designs and often available at gas stations, vape shops, and online retailers.

Health Risks and Misuse

While nitrous oxide has legitimate medical and culinary uses, the FDA noted a rise in reports of adverse health effects linked to its recreational misuse. The gas is traditionally used as a sedative in dental offices and hospitals and is also found in whipped cream dispensers. However, it has long been misused by young people seeking a temporary high, as the gas can momentarily disrupt oxygen flow to the brain.

The misuse of these flavored nitrous oxide canisters has been widely documented on social media, where videos show individuals inhaling the gas from balloons or directly from the canisters. Despite being labeled as “for culinary use only,” these products are frequently used recreationally.

FDA and Poison Control Concerns

According to the FDA, poison control centers have reported a rise in emergency calls from people suffering health complications after inhaling nitrous oxide. Some users have been rushed to the hospital after collapsing due to the gas’s effects on oxygen levels in the body.

Though federal laws do not currently restrict the sale of nitrous oxide, some states have implemented minimum age requirements to curb misuse. The FDA has regulatory authority over the gas when used in medical settings, but it remains unclear how much oversight it can exercise over products marketed for culinary use.

The agency is urging consumers to be aware of the dangers of inhaling nitrous oxide and is working to track and address the growing health risks associated with these flavored products.
