Middle East Tensions Keep Pressure on Fuel Prices as Ireland Faces Rising Energy Costs

Uncertainty in global energy markets continues to influence fuel prices in Ireland as renewed tensions in the Middle East raise concerns about oil supplies, while households and businesses prepare for higher transport and utility costs in the months ahead.

Although oil prices are often associated with seasonal demand, industry experts say global crude prices are driven mainly by economic conditions, geopolitical developments and activity in futures markets rather than the time of year.

Heating oil prices have reflected that volatility. Data from oilprices.ie shows the cheapest price for 500 litres this year was €473.43 on January 18, before conflict in the Middle East intensified. Prices later climbed to a peak of €903 on April 7, several weeks after military action involving the United States and Israel and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

This week, the average cost of 500 litres stood at €595.81 on July 8 before rising to €619.74 the following day. The increase came as oil markets reacted to renewed hostilities after US President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire with Iran had ended. Analysts noted, however, that retail fuel prices do not always respond immediately to changes in crude oil markets.

Global oil prices have remained well below the highs recorded earlier in the conflict. Brent crude traded below $80 a barrel by Friday afternoon after briefly rising, while US West Texas Intermediate also eased as traders assessed the latest developments and the outlook for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Fuel retailers in Ireland are already warning motorists of higher costs. The Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association said wholesale diesel prices delivered to filling stations had increased by around eight cents per litre, excluding VAT, with many forecourts expected to pass those increases on to customers. Diesel prices could move above €1.80 per litre in some areas, while wholesale petrol prices have also risen modestly.

The Government previously introduced temporary reductions in fuel excise duties to ease pressure on consumers during the energy crisis. Those cuts are scheduled to be phased out between September and December. Tánaiste and Finance Minister Simon Harris said the Government intends to restore the duties gradually while continuing to monitor market conditions.

Industry representatives have urged ministers to reconsider the timetable if geopolitical tensions continue to keep global oil prices elevated. They argue that reinstating higher fuel taxes during another period of market instability would place additional pressure on motorists and businesses.

Ireland’s fuel supply remains secure despite market volatility. Industry leaders said supply chains continue to operate effectively, with strong trading links helping maintain access to fuel imports. However, they cautioned that Ireland has little influence over international oil prices and remains vulnerable to global events.

The impact is also being felt beyond transport. Several energy suppliers have announced electricity and natural gas price increases in recent weeks. Economists say higher energy costs remain one of the main drivers of inflation, even as overall consumer price growth eased slightly in June.

Analysts expect developments in global energy markets to remain a key factor influencing inflation and household costs as policymakers prepare for upcoming monetary policy decisions across the eurozone.
