The UK has officially launched its first military satellite able to take daytime photos of the earth’s surface, a major boost to its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. On Friday, the satellite dubbed Tyche was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, co-founded by billionaire Elon Musk.
Tyche is a ‘cutting-edge’ asset and was part of a wider programme to improve military operations, as well as to monitor natural disasters and the effects of environmental and climate change, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said. This launch marks the first of many planned satellites in a future constellation, which will enhance the UK’s ISR capabilities.
Tyche will be an integral part of military missions and important information for government activities other than military. The satellite has multiple applications such as mapping, environmental monitoring, and assessment of climate impact.
Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry Maria Eagle highlighted the significance of Tyche for defence and Government operations. Tyche will be used for intelligence required for military missions, and for a variety of other types of operations within government. The launch of this satellite further highlights the UK’s dedication to science and technology innovation, sector growth and high-skilled employment in the UK,” Eagle said.
Tyche is a major step on the road to improving the UK’s space-based ISR capability. The satellite’s cutting-edge imaging capabilities are anticipated to enhance the UK’s capacity to monitor and react across a range of situations, from military engagements to normal disasters.
Tyche will be followed by more satellites as part of the MoD’s overall strategy as they will make up a constellation which will enhance the UK’s space based surveillance and reconnaissance capability. Tyche’s successful deployment demonstrates the continued investment from the UK in cutting-edge space technologies and its strategic role in national security and government operations.
