In a surprise move, President Donald Trump has appointed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy as the interim Administrator of NASA, marking a departure from tradition in the leadership of the U.S. space agency. The announcement was made Wednesday on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social.
Duffy, 52, is the first NASA chief in recent memory without a background in science, engineering, or aerospace. Instead, he brings a unique résumé shaped by reality television, law, politics, and media. He will continue to lead the Department of Transportation while serving in the temporary NASA role.
“Sean is doing a TREMENDOUS job in handling our country’s Transportation Affairs,” Trump wrote. “He will be a fantastic leader of the ever more important Space Agency, even if only for a short period of time.”
Duffy responded on X (formerly Twitter), calling the appointment an “honor” and pledging to serve with “focus and humility.”
The appointment follows Trump’s decision in May to withdraw the nomination of billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman just days before his expected confirmation. Isaacman, a close associate of Elon Musk, was reportedly sidelined amid rising tensions between Trump and the Tesla and SpaceX CEO over tax policy.
Duffy is no stranger to public life. He first gained fame as a cast member of MTV’s “The Real World: Boston” in the 1990s and later appeared on “Road Rules: All Stars,” where he met his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, now a Fox News host. The couple, who have nine children, co-host a political podcast and are known for promoting conservative family values.
Before entering national politics, Duffy served nearly a decade as district attorney of Ashland County, Wisconsin. He was elected to Congress in 2010 during the Tea Party wave and held the seat until 2019, when he stepped down to focus on his family after his youngest child was diagnosed with a heart condition.
Following his departure from Capitol Hill, Duffy worked as a CNN contributor, where he sparked controversy over remarks made during the Trump impeachment proceedings. He later transitioned to lobbying and television, co-hosting a show on Fox Business before returning to government as Transportation Secretary in January.
As head of the Transportation Department, Duffy has overseen major efforts to reform the nation’s air traffic control system in response to a string of safety incidents, including a fatal midair collision in Washington, D.C., earlier this year. His agency is working to modernize outdated telecommunications and expand staffing for air traffic controllers.
While his experience with space policy is limited, Duffy’s appointment underscores Trump’s preference for loyalty and media-savvy leadership. NASA has not yet commented on the transition, and no timeline has been given for the appointment of a permanent Administrator.
