Former US President Joe Biden’s cancer has spread further, his son Hunter Biden said in an interview with the BBC, offering a new account of the 83-year-old former president’s health.
Hunter Biden said the disease had metastasized to his father’s bones and beyond. He described the condition as painful and debilitating but did not provide details about where else the cancer may have spread. Biden’s office has not publicly released further information about the progression of the disease.
Joe Biden disclosed his prostate cancer diagnosis in May 2025. His office said at the time that he had prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9, placing it in Grade Group 5, with the disease having spread to his bones. The cancer was described as hormone-sensitive, allowing for treatment and management.
Biden later underwent radiation therapy for prostate cancer in October 2025. He also had surgery to remove skin cancer lesions in September of that year.
His wife, Jill Biden, has said the disease will remain part of his life. In a recent podcast interview, she described dealing with the illness as a daily challenge for the family.
Hunter Biden also discussed his father’s health during the 2024 presidential campaign, saying he was shocked by Biden’s widely criticised debate performance against Donald Trump. Biden withdrew from the presidential race several weeks later.
Hunter said the family did not know at the time that his father would later be diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer and metastatic bone cancer. He questioned whether the illness may have affected Biden’s condition during the campaign but said there was no way to know at the time.
Despite leaving the White House, Joe Biden continues to make public appearances. Hunter said his father remains committed to public life and continues speaking about issues important to him. Biden delivered a keynote address at the Maryland Democratic Party Gala in June.
Hunter also addressed his own legal history during the interview. He was convicted in 2024 of three federal firearms-related felonies and pleaded guilty to nine federal tax charges. Joe Biden later granted his son a full and unconditional pardon covering federal offenses committed or alleged over a 10-year period.
The pardon drew criticism from Democrats and Republicans. Hunter Biden acknowledged that the decision could damage his father’s legacy and said it was reasonable for critics to question it.
The Biden family has a personal history with cancer. Joe Biden’s eldest son, Beau Biden, died from glioblastoma in 2015 at the age of 46. The loss helped shape Joe and Jill Biden’s long-standing advocacy for cancer research and treatment.
Joe Biden, who served as the 46th US president from 2021 to 2025, continues to receive treatment while remaining publicly active.
