Silent Treatment Can Harm Relationships, Experts Say: How to Handle Conflict Without Cutting Off Communication

Taking a break during an argument can help people calm down and prevent a disagreement from becoming more damaging. Relationship experts say, however, that there is an important difference between asking for space and deliberately refusing to communicate.

A healthy pause usually includes an explanation and an agreement to continue the conversation later. The silent treatment, by contrast, often leaves the other person uncertain about what happened or whether communication will resume.

Psychologist Rachel Needle said both behaviours can look similar from the outside because they involve withdrawing from a difficult conversation. The key difference is whether the person explains why they need time and provides some indication of when they will return.

Someone who feels overwhelmed might say they need time to calm down and suggest continuing the discussion later that day. This reassures the other person that the relationship has not been abandoned.

People may become silent for many reasons. Some fear saying something hurtful, while others have learned to shut down when confronted with difficult emotions. For some, withdrawing becomes a way of avoiding discomfort rather than working through a disagreement.

In other situations, silence can be used to create anxiety and pressure the other person into apologising or giving in. Whatever the intention, prolonged unexplained withdrawal can leave the recipient feeling rejected, uncertain and excluded.

Experts recommend focusing on observable behaviour rather than trying to guess another person’s motives. People can ask whether the person requested space, gave a timeframe for reconnecting and followed up when that period ended.

Context also matters. A delayed response from a friend who normally communicates infrequently may mean little, while suddenly disappearing during an argument can be much more significant in a close relationship.

When someone stops responding, experts advise sending one calm message rather than repeatedly calling or texting. A person might acknowledge that the other individual appears to need space while asking when they can resume the conversation.

Repeated messages can increase tension and may unintentionally reinforce an unhealthy pattern. Returning the silent treatment is also unlikely to solve the problem.

Therapists describe a common pursue-withdraw cycle in which one person urgently seeks resolution while the other retreats. As the first person increases calls and messages, the second may withdraw even further.

Instead, experts suggest stepping away from the cycle and focusing on activities that reduce anxiety, such as walking, talking with a trusted friend or writing down thoughts.

Once communication resumes, couples should discuss what happened rather than simply moving on. They can agree on how either person will request a break, how long it should last and how they will reconnect.

Clinical psychologist Avigail Lev recommends establishing these expectations in advance. A person who needs additional time should still check in and provide a new timeframe.

Boundaries can also clarify what each person needs during disagreements. One episode of withdrawal does not necessarily define a relationship, experts say. The larger concern is a repeated pattern in which one person is left responsible for managing uncertainty.

If prolonged silence continues despite repeated efforts to address it, professional support may help. In relationships where withdrawal becomes controlling or leaves someone constantly distressed, reconsidering the relationship may also be necessary.
